All newcomers, no sitting members

The Bharatiya Janata Party has unveiled a slate of eight fresh names for the ten Rajya Sabha seats that will be contested in Uttar Pradesh. None of the candidates currently occupies a seat in the Upper House, signalling the party’s push to inject fresh talent ahead of the October 16 election.

Balancing caste and geography

Reflecting the state’s intricate social tapestry, the roster pulls together representatives from four major communities, aiming for an equitable caste equation.

OBC representation

  • Dharampal Singh – the Lodhi MLA from Aonla, known for his grassroots legislative work.
  • Prakash Pal – head of the state OBC Morcha, with a strong organisational footprint across the Kanpur‑Bundelkhand belt.
  • Shruti Gangwar – a young leader from Bareilly and daughter of senior BJP figure Santosh Gangwar.

Brahmin voices

  • Radhakant Ojha – veteran lawyer from Prayagraj and former president of the Allahabad High Court Bar Association.
  • Gopi Krishna Pandey – long‑time party functionary with deep organisational roots.

Dalit representation

  • Vidyasagar Sonkar – former Lok Sabha MP and ex‑member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.
  • Priyanka Singh Rawat – ex‑MP from Barabanki, bringing seasoned parliamentary experience.

Rajput inclusion

Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan, the state general secretary and former Etmadpur MLA, completes the caste mosaic.

Organisational weight and gender balance

Beyond caste considerations, the list showcases heavy party‑building credentials. Prakash Pal’s tenure overseeing the Kanpur‑Bundelkhand region and Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan’s strategic role at the state level underline the emphasis on seasoned operatives.

The slate also reserves two spots for women – Priyanka Singh Rawat and Shruti Gangwar – marking a modest yet noteworthy step toward gender parity.

Election timeline and opposition line‑up

Nomination papers must be filed by October 6, with the voting scheduled for October 16. The Samajwadi Party has already named Ram Gopal Yadav and Dhanraj Nathwani as its candidates, setting the stage for a contest that could range from an easy win for the BJP to a tightly fought battle for the Upper House seats.
