At approximately 1:30 p.m. on Friday, an unidentified group hurled bricks at the Shree Swaminarayan Vadtal Dham Hindu Mandir in Richmond Heights, Ohio. The projectiles shattered several panes of glass and left visible damage inside the sanctuary while priests and congregants were present.
Law Enforcement and Federal Partners Examine the Incident
Local police are scrutinizing the temple’s security footage to reconstruct the attack and identify the culprits. The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) confirmed that the video has been turned over to investigators and that the case has also been forwarded to the FBI and civil‑rights authorities.
To date, no suspect has been publicly named and no arrests have been reported.
Community Leaders Demand an Expedited, Open Inquiry
National Hindu groups, including the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), are pressing officials to act swiftly, hold perpetrators accountable, and publicly condemn the assault. CoHNA has specifically called on Richmond Heights Mayor Kim Thomas and other local officials to denounce the incident and reassure the Hindu community of their safety.
While some observers suspect a hate‑based motive, law‑enforcement agencies have not yet confirmed any bias element.
Worshippers Unharmed Amid the Chaos
Despite the turmoil, no one was injured during the attack. The primary harm consists of broken windows and other property damage, which temple staff continue to document.
HAF has urged authorities to locate those responsible and issue a strong public statement opposing any rhetoric that threatens Hindu or Indian‑American communities.
Historical Vandalism of Hindu Temples Cited
CoHNA referenced prior vandalism incidents at Hindu temples in New York and California, noting that each case occurred under different circumstances. While these events raise concerns, they remain separate investigations and do not, on their own, establish a nationwide trend.
The Richmond Heights case remains active as investigators continue to review video evidence and pursue leads to determine whether religious bias played a role.
