Uttarakhand’s iconic Char Dham circuit—Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri—welcomed an astonishing 56,18,497 devotees in 2023, eclipsing earlier highs and establishing a fresh milestone for religious tourism in the region.
A Historic Footfall
The 2023 season saw pilgrims from every corner of India and abroad converge on the four holy sites, pushing the total count past the 56‑lakh mark for the first time. By September 14, the tally had already crossed 50.56 lakh, signalling a steady climb in interest.
Prioritising Safety and Comfort
State officials have stepped up preparations to accommodate the swelling crowds while safeguarding their wellbeing. Key enhancements include expanded medical units, stricter traffic management, reliable drinking water supplies, upgraded sanitation facilities, and additional parking and lodging along the mountain routes.
Emergency response teams—comprising district administration, police, health officers, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other agencies—remain on high alert, especially on the fragile Himalayan stretches where landslides and weather‑related hazards are a constant concern.
Infrastructure Upgrades Fuel Confidence
Guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, major connectivity projects around Kedarnath, Badrinath and the other sacred locales have accelerated. New roadways, modernised helipads and upgraded pilgrim amenities have transformed the travel experience, encouraging more devotees to undertake the journey.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s Remarks
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami lauded the achievement, stressing that every pilgrim is treated as an honoured guest of Uttarakhand. He reaffirmed the government’s pledge to ensure a safe, comfortable passage for all, and praised the collective effort of administrators, police, health workers, SDRF personnel, local bodies, priests and residents.
With the 2023 Char Dham Yatra breaking the 56‑lakh barrier, Uttarakhand has cemented its reputation as a premier destination for spiritual seekers, setting an ambitious benchmark for future pilgrimage seasons.
