Dehradun – In a bid to transform the city into a cleaner, plastic‑free zone, the district administration has intensified its enforcement sweep against single‑use plastic. Acting on the directive of District Magistrate Dr. Ashish Chauhan, the operation now covers all 100 wards of the Municipal Corporation.

To ensure thorough monitoring, fifty sector officers have been deployed across the city. Their teams have already carried out surprise inspections at 1,776 commercial premises, ranging from street vendors to large retail outlets. Out of these, 762 establishments were found violating the ban on the use, storage, or sale of disposable plastic items.

Consequences were swift: 550 businesses received penalty notices, and the administration collected fines amounting to ₹1.96 lakh. In addition, officials seized and destroyed 532 kg of prohibited plastic during the drive.

Beyond Penalties: Raising Public Consciousness

The campaign’s purpose extends beyond revenue generation. Officials stress that curbing single‑use plastic requires a change in mindset. Traders and citizens are being educated about the environmental hazards of plastic waste and are urged to switch to sustainable alternatives.

Authorities appeal to the community to cooperate fully—by avoiding the purchase, storage, or distribution of banned plastic—so that Dehradun can truly become a model of urban cleanliness and ecological responsibility. The success of the initiative hinges on collective action, not just on enforcement.
