New Delhi – The capital is set to undergo a massive digital transformation of its road‑control infrastructure. The Union government has approved a ₹1,789.52 crore Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) that will be deployed by the Delhi Police, interlinking every existing traffic signal with a centralised, real‑time data hub.
Smart Signals That Adjust to Real‑World Flow
The core of the ITMS is a network of intelligent traffic lights. By analysing live vehicle counts, each signal can automatically extend or shorten its green phase to reflect the actual demand on that corridor. Heavily trafficked routes enjoy longer greens, while quieter streets see reduced wait times, smoothing traffic across the city’s main arteries.
Instant Green Corridors for Emergency Vehicles
When an ambulance, fire‑engine or police car approaches, the system instantly recognises the request and synchronises the lights along its route. This creates an uninterrupted “green corridor” that shepherds first‑responders through traffic without manual intervention.
Real‑Time Visibility of Congestion and Crashes
ITMS supplies traffic controllers with a continuous stream of data on vehicle speeds, bottleneck zones and accident locations. Armed with these insights, officials can dynamically reroute traffic, dispatch assistance or tweak signal timings on the fly, shifting from reactive to proactive traffic management.
AI‑Enhanced Cameras Enforce Road Rules
AI‑enabled surveillance cameras will patrol the streets, automatically detecting violations such as red‑light jumping, stop‑line crossing, overspeeding, wrong‑way driving, riding without helmets, neglecting seat‑belts, illegal parking and mobile‑phone use while driving.
A Data‑Centric Future for Delhi’s Roads
By fusing live traffic feeds, adaptive signalling and AI‑driven monitoring, the ₹1,789.52 crore initiative moves Delhi beyond a static, signal‑only model. The new platform promises quicker commutes, safer streets and unhindered access for emergency services, heralding a truly intelligent urban traffic ecosystem.
