Homs, Syria – A passenger bus traveling close to the Masyaf Bridge in the western outskirts of Homs was suddenly ambushed by gunfire, leaving at least seven dead and four wounded. The vehicle was carrying employees of a local firm who were heading home after a full day's work.
SANA, the state news agency, reported that the shooters have not been identified. The injured were rushed to nearby medical facilities, while security forces swiftly moved in to secure the area.
Formal Inquiry Launched
Authorities have opened a formal investigation to determine who ordered the assault and why. No militant group or individual has claimed responsibility, and officials have not publicly named any suspects.
"We regard this strike as an effort to destabilise the region and undermine public safety," said Brigadier General Bassem Mohammad Shaaban, commander of the Homs Internal Security Forces.
Forensic teams are collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses as part of the ongoing probe.
Workers Targeted on Their Way Home
Initial reports confirm the bus was transporting civilian workers back to their homes after completing their duties. Emergency responders evacuated the casualties to hospitals across the Homs district, where they received treatment.
Officials stressed that the investigation will continue until the full circumstances are clarified and those responsible are brought to justice.
Syria’s Ongoing Security Challenges
The incident occurs against a backdrop of persistent insecurity that has lingered for more than 13 years of conflict, even after the fall of Bashar al‑Assad’s government in December 2024. While authorities strive to stabilise the country, sporadic shootings and violent episodes continue to erupt in various provinces.
