New Delhi: The Delhi Police have officially registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Congress heavyweights Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with several opposition members, following a protest that turned into a standoff at the Election Commission’s Akashvani Bhawan.

Why the Demonstration Was Launched

The INDIA alliance organised a march to demand a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls and to call for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Approximately 200 Members of Parliament set out from the Parliament House with the aim of reaching the Election Commission’s headquarters.

Police Halt Near Akashvani Bhawan

After walking roughly 700 metres along Parliament Street, the procession was stopped by police personnel who said the rally did not have permission to enter the government complex. Undeterred, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other leaders either climbed over or walked around the police barricades, proceeding onto the Akashvani Bhawan premises where they began a sit‑in.

Detention and Night‑Time Release

Law enforcement repeatedly ordered the group to vacate the building, but the leaders insisted on meeting Election Commission officials. After several hours inside the complex, police moved in and escorted the protesters out. Alongside the Gandhis, Congress members such as K.C. Venugopal, Deepender Hooda and Pawan Khera, as well as a number of MPs and party workers, were taken into custody. The detainees were shifted to the New Police Lines at Kingsway Camp and were released later that night.

FIR Registration and Ongoing Investigation

The FIR, filed at Parliament Street Police Station, accuses the accused of unauthorised entry into the Akashvani Bhawan complex. Investigators are now probing the actions of every individual named in the complaint.

This incident adds another chapter to the growing confrontation between the opposition and the Election Commission over alleged irregularities in the electoral‑roll revision process, with security forces maintaining heightened vigilance across central Delhi.
