Gangotri Temple Enters Winter Hiatus

Uttarkashi authorities announced that the famed Gangotri Dham will close its gates for the cold season on 10 November at 12:05 PM. The timing coincides with the auspicious Abhijit Muhurat and overlaps with the traditional Annakoot and Govardhan Puja festivities.

Rituals Accompany the Farewell

The temple committee, chaired by secretary Suresh Semwal, confirmed the schedule after the ninth day of Sharadiya Navratri. As the final bells echo, the ceremonial palanquin carrying Goddess Ganga will be escorted out of the sanctum in a procession backed by an Army band and resonant chants of “Jai Maa Ganga.”

The Journey to Mukhba Village

Following the closure ceremony, the holy palanquin will travel to Mukhba, the high‑altitude hamlet that serves as Ganga’s winter abode. The convoy is expected to reach the village on 11 November, the day of Bhai Dooj, where a series of prayers and rites will be performed.

Devotees are invited to gather at the temporary shrine in Mukhba, offering their respects and seeking blessings throughout the six‑month winter period. This relocation ensures uninterrupted worship despite the main temple’s inaccessibility during heavy snowfall.

Seasonal Significance

The winter shutdown marks the conclusion of this year’s Char Dham pilgrimage season. While the high‑altitude location forces the main sanctum to close, moving the palanquin preserves spiritual continuity for pilgrims who wish to continue their devotion to the holy river goddess.

For the next half‑year, Mukhba will become the focal point of worship, allowing believers to maintain their connection with Goddess Ganga until the temple reopens in spring.
