New Delhi – After a six‑year spell leading the side, India’s women’s cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur announced on Tuesday that she will relinquish the armband in Tests, ODIs and T20Is to devote herself fully to her role as a player.

A Remarkable Leadership Chapter Draws to a Close

Now 37, Kaur has been a cornerstone of Indian women’s cricket, having captained the team in five Tests, 51 ODIs and 155 T20 internationals. One of the crowning achievements of her tenure came last month when she helped India secure a second consecutive Asian Games gold medal in the women’s event.

Her decision arrives on the heels of the recent World Cup triumph, providing a story‑book ending to a captaincy marked by both triumphs and trials.

The Verdict Followed a Strategic BCCI Session

The announcement was made a day after a planning meeting in Guwahati that included Kaur, vice‑captain Smriti Mandhana, head coach Amol Muzumdar and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. The gathering focused on charting the future course for the Indian women’s team, and Kaur’s statement forms a key part of the transition plan.

Team First, Personal Ambitions Later

Reflecting on her years in charge, Kaur emphasized that she consistently placed the side’s interests above her own goals. She spoke about making tough decisions, weathering criticism and constantly striving to build a stronger, more resilient unit.

She also underscored the importance of creating opportunities for younger players, acknowledging that not every choice would please everyone, but that the overarching aim was the long‑term health of the squad.

From Setbacks to World Cup Glory

Kaur’s captaincy blended difficult periods with historic successes. While she endured defeats, intense scrutiny and pressure, she also enjoyed the pride of leading India on the world stage.

The pinnacle was undoubtedly the World Cup victory – a moment that now serves as a fitting bookend to her leadership and highlights the significance of her departure for Indian women’s cricket.

She expressed confidence in the depth of the team, believing the side has the talent and foundation required to keep progressing.

Her Playing Career Is Far From Over

Stepping down from the leadership role does not equate to retirement. Kaur made it clear that she remains available for international duty and intends to keep contributing on the field, driven by her love for the game.

She thanked teammates, coaches, support staff, the BCCI, her family and fans for their unwavering support throughout her captaincy.

While her era as India’s captain has concluded, Kaur’s playing days are set to continue, offering the team a seasoned performer in a refreshed capacity.
