Fatal Incident at Sur Ghat
While observing the Jitiya festivities, two eighteen‑year‑old girls, Kajal Kumari and Pinky Kumari of Zakheera, slipped into the swift currents of the Yamuna River at Sur Ghat, close to the Wazirabad bridge, and tragically drowned. The pair had travelled with their relatives to perform the customary river‑bath ceremony.
Rescue Effort and Recovery
Onlookers raised alarms as the girls disappeared beneath the water. Local rescue divers and emergency volunteers launched an immediate search, eventually retrieving the bodies from the river. Unfortunately, both victims had already succumbed to the powerful flow.
Police Response and Autopsy
A team from Timarpur police station arrived swiftly, secured the recovered bodies and sent them for post‑mortem analysis.
“The girls entered a deeper part of the river during the ritual bath and, regrettably, drowned,” explained North Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Niharika Bhatt.
An official inquiry has been launched to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the deaths.
Families Question Ghat Safety
In the aftermath, relatives of Kajal and Pinky have raised serious concerns about the safety infrastructure at the ghat. They point out the absence of proper barriers, clear warning signs, and on‑site security personnel to prevent access to hazardous deep water zones.
Police officials have assured the public that they will review current safety provisions and address the shortcomings highlighted by the grieving families.
