Man Detained in Himachal Over Alleged Rape Tied to Broken Marriage Promise

Law enforcement in Mandi has taken into custody a man from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, accused of raping a woman who had placed her trust in his promise of marriage.

Details of the complaint

The victim alleges that Sameer, son of Dilshad and a resident of the Civil Lines area in Muzaffarnagar, pledged to marry her, then accompanied her to Mandi where the assault purportedly occurred. After the incident, he allegedly absconded with her motorcycle, mobile phone, approximately ₹70,000 in cash, and jewellery, leaving her stranded in Chandigarh. Subsequent attempts to reach him were ignored.

Investigation chronology

The grievance was lodged on 29 August as a Zero FIR at the Civil Lines Police Station in Muzaffarnagar and later transferred to the Sadar Police Station in Mandi for a thorough probe.

Following the filing, the complainant posted a video from Mandi questioning the delay in locating the accused, noting that his phone remained active. Investigators examined the cellular‑tower logs, pinpointed the signal to Thural in Kangra district, and moved in to apprehend him just before he could exit the state.

Official statement

Mandi Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar confirmed that the case is under active investigation and that Sameer will be produced before a court in accordance with due process.

Authorities are now reviewing the entire set of allegations, including the alleged theft of money and jewellery, to determine additional charges based on the evidence collected.
