New Delhi – On 6 October, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that left‑handed opening bat Smriti Mandhana will take over as the full‑time skipper of the Indian women’s cricket side, succeeding Harmanpreet Kaur.
Mandhana’s Rise on the International Stage
Since breaking into the senior squad in 2013, Mandhana has evolved into one of the most prolific run‑makers in the women’s game, representing India across Tests, ODIs and T20Is. She has already captained the side in 18 T20 Internationals and four One‑Day Internationals, and has spent several seasons as vice‑captain. The BCCI cited her blend of experience and deep familiarity with the group as a decisive factor in the appointment.
Franchise Success with Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Beyond the national setup, Mandhana has shone in the Women’s Premier League. As the leader of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, she guided the franchise to titles in 2024 and again in 2026, cementing her reputation as a tactically astute and inspirational leader.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s Enduring Influence
While Harmanpreet Kaur will continue to feature in the playing XI, she will hand over the captaincy. Under her stewardship, India clinched its first Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025 and secured gold at the Asian Games, captaining the side across all three formats.
Looking Ahead
Mandhana’s first assignment as permanent captain arrives with a series against Zimbabwe – three T20Is followed by three ODIs – slated to kick off on 16 October. The BCCI expressed confidence that her extensive international exposure, prior leadership experience, and proven WPL credentials will propel the team to new heights.
