Comprehensive CCTV Expansion Around the Taj Mahal

The Agra Development Authority has approved a sweeping upgrade of video surveillance surrounding the world‑renowned Taj Mahal. Ninety modern cameras will be positioned within the 500‑metre “yellow zone,” forming a denser monitoring net for the monument’s surroundings.

Why the Expanded Network Matters

These additional cameras will focus on the high‑traffic corridors, entry points and key thoroughfares that currently suffer from blind spots. Enhanced visual coverage is expected to give security agencies a clearer picture of on‑ground activity, enabling faster responses to any suspicious or disruptive behaviour.

Integrating with Existing Infrastructure

The site already benefits from a CCTV framework installed during the 2016 Tajganj project, later complemented by smart poles equipped with cameras and public‑address systems. Nevertheless, gaps remain. The new batch of ninety units is designed to plug those holes, delivering a seamless surveillance blanket.

Security responsibilities are divided between zones: the monument itself lies in the “red zone,” guarded by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), while the surrounding 500‑metre “yellow zone” falls under the jurisdiction of local police and the Punjab and Chandigarh (PAC) forces.

Tourist Safety at the Forefront

Officials expect the bolstered network to not only aid law‑enforcement but also enhance the experience of the millions of visitors who flock to the site each year. Better monitoring can curb unauthorised activities, manage crowd‑related congestion and deter incidents targeting tourists.

The upgrade also aims to keep a tighter watch on individuals known to harass or threaten visitors, further reinforcing the monument’s reputation as a safe destination.

Implementation Timeline

With the tender process now underway, the authority has instructed contractors to begin installation as soon as paperwork clears. A six‑month deadline underscores the urgency of reinforcing security around one of India’s most treasured heritage sites.

Once operational, the expanded system will provide a robust, real‑time view of activity around the Taj Mahal, strengthening both protection measures and overall site management.
