Lucknow – After an exhaustive aerial and ground mapping of water‑logged zones surrounding the state capital, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a far‑reaching flood‑control initiative. The flagship element is a new embankment stretching from Faizullaganj to Naimish, designed to curb the frequent overflows of the Gomti River.
A Green Levee Doubling as a Transport Corridor
The planned structure will serve a dual purpose: a raised flood barrier topped with a paved roadway that will function as a green corridor. Survey teams have been tasked with a detailed top‑down assessment of the Gomti’s banks and the preparation of a full‑scale project dossier. Alongside the levee, an integrated network of drainage channels and pumping stations will be installed to funnel rainwater away from the protected zone, guaranteeing swift evacuation of excess water.
On‑Site Relief Assessment
During a visit to the flood‑stricken locality of Bakshi Ka Talab, the chief minister interacted with residents, inspected a temporary health camp, and supervised the distribution of emergency kits. He directed the relocation of families from high‑risk spots to provisional shelters set up in schools and community halls.
Assistance for Displaced Households
Shelters are now mandated to provide hot meals twice a day, supply milk for children, and serve nutrient‑rich food for pregnant women. Livestock owners will receive fodder rations, while power‑deficient sites will be equipped with solar lanterns and Petromax lamps.
Compensation Framework
Families who lost members to drowning or lightning strikes will be granted an immediate cash assistance of ₹4 lakh. Households whose homes were entirely destroyed and meet eligibility criteria will be allocated units under existing state housing schemes. Agricultural damages—both crop and livestock losses—will be evaluated so that qualifying farmers can claim appropriate compensation.
Relief Kits Containing 26 Essentials
Each affected family is receiving a kit packed with 26 essential items such as rice, wheat flour, potatoes, pulses, cooking oil, salt, spices and waterproof sheeting. The kits are intended to sustain families until regular supplies are restored.
Security and Medical Measures
The CM ordered police, Home Guards, PRD staff and local watchmen to patrol the relief camps and vacated homes, protecting property and averting looting. Health posts will keep anti‑snake‑venom and anti‑rabies injections ready, while dedicated medical and veterinary camps are being rolled out across the hardest‑hit zones.
Why This Year’s Floods Were So Severe
Intense monsoon rains over the Gomti’s upstream catchment—including Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur and parts of neighbouring Nepal—caused river levels to surge dramatically, submerging low‑lying districts around Lucknow. Positioning the Faizullaganj‑Naimish embankment as a long‑term safeguard promises not only flood mitigation but also improved regional connectivity via the road that will crown the levee.
