Upcoming Weather Situation
The state’s meteorological agency has placed Uttarakhand under a yellow alert from 6 October through 11 October. During this window the mountainous regions will see a blend of rain, thunderstorm activity and, at the highest altitudes, early snowfall, while the lower plains are projected to stay largely dry.
Snowfall Forecast
According to Weather Director Dr. C.S. Tomar, snow is expected to start in areas above 4,200 metres between 6 and 8 October. From 9 to 11 October the snow line should drop to roughly 3,800 metres, ushering a noticeable chill to the upper hills.
Hill Districts Under Yellow Alert
Seven hill districts have been singled out for heightened monitoring:
- Chamoli
- Nainital
- Pithoragarh
- Bageshwar
- Almora
- Rudraprayag
- Uttarkashi
These zones may experience wind gusts of 30‑40 km/h, frequent thunderstorms and the possibility of lightning strikes.
Rain and Thunderstorm Outlook
Light to moderate rain is forecast for several mountain stretches, accompanied by occasional gusts, thunder and lightning. The department also anticipates moderate rainfall on 6‑7 October for Nainital, Champawat, Almora, Dehradun, Tehri and Pauri, with thunderstorms likely to accompany the showers.
Temperature Changes
As snow blankets the higher elevations, temperatures will fall sharply in those areas. In contrast, the lower‑lying plains should enjoy relatively milder and drier weather throughout the alert period.
