New Delhi – Veteran Indian leg‑spinner Yuzvendra Chahal announced on Friday that he will retire from first‑class cricket, concluding a near‑decade of red‑ball service while insisting his ambition to represent India in ODIs and T20Is remains undiminished.
A Red‑Ball Curtain Call
Chahal reflected on a journey that began when he was ten years old and first picked up a red ball. He said the longer format taught him patience, resilience and the mental toughness required to survive challenging spells on the field.
Although a Test cap remained elusive, he expressed heartfelt gratitude for the memories and opportunities the format afforded, acknowledging its pivotal role in shaping the bowler he has become.
148 Wickets Across 49 Matches
The 36‑year‑old bowler finishes his first‑class ledger with 148 wickets at an average of 32.27, his best figures a tidy 6 for 25. His latest stint was with Northamptonshire in England’s county circuit.
Chahal’s final first‑class outing came at Lord’s against Middlesex, where he captured two wickets. In the 2026‑27 County Championship he claimed 21 wickets in five games, highlighted by a nine‑wicket haul versus Durham.
Targeting an ODI/T20I Comeback
Even as he steps away from the red ball, Chahal made it clear he is not shutting the door on international cricket. In his farewell note he reaffirmed his desire to wear the Indian jersey in limited‑overs cricket and insisted he still has plenty of game left in him.
He also thanked the Haryana Cricket Association and key mentors – Ranbir Singh Mahindra and Anirudh Singh Choudhary – for their unwavering support throughout his career.
With the first‑class chapter closed, Chahal’s focus now lies entirely on the shorter formats, hoping to earn his way back into the Indian side.
