Gas leak sparks massive fire in a Kotkapura residence

Early Monday morning, a dwelling on Labbu Ram Street in Kotkapura was engulfed in flames after a suspected gas leak. Within minutes the blaze intensified, and two LPG cylinders inside the house exploded, sending a thick column of smoke over the neighbourhood.

Where and when it happened

The property, located close to Dera Sat Kartar, first drew attention when neighbours observed dense smoke pouring from the roof. The fire grew rapidly, and shortly thereafter the two loud cylinder blasts echoed through the lane.

Owner was away

The house belongs to Shyam Lal Dhingra, who was travelling with his family to Sri Muktsar Sahib for a relative’s funeral. Consequently, no family member was present when the fire broke out.

Fire‑fighting response

Local fire‑brigade units arrived quickly after the alarm. As the flames proved too aggressive for the first engine, a larger fire tender was dispatched to reinforce the effort. Firefighters fought the inferno for several minutes before finally gaining control.

Extent of the damage

When the fire was finally doused, most of the household’s possessions had turned to ash. Furniture, kitchenware and personal effects were heavily damaged. The family estimates the total loss at roughly ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2 lakh.

Official comments and plea for support

Fire officer Sukhwinder Singh said a gas leak is the most probable cause and confirmed the two cylinder explosions. The Dhingra family, together with nearby residents, have appealed to authorities for financial assistance to rebuild.

Investigation underway

Authorities have launched an inquiry to determine the exact circumstances that led to the leak and the ensuing fire.
